In the year 2022-23 across all levels of government, total taxation revenue was:

  • $755.8 billion
  • $72.7 billion (10.6%) higher than 2021-22
  • 29.5% as a percentage of GDP.

Taxation revenue

All Australia total taxation revenue continued to grow, reaching $755.8b in 2022-23 (up 10.6%), while taxation revenue as a percentage of GDP was 29.5%. Positive annual growth was recorded for all levels of government.

Statistical revisions are carried out regularly in Government Finance Statistics (GFS) to reflect the most current information and data available.

Divergences with government fiscal reporting

Divergences between state and commonwealth government financial reporting and GFS may occur because of conceptual determinations and timing recognition differences, to ensure alignment with economic activity as measured across ABS macroeconomic statistics.
