Supply of energy products

Total supply of energy for Australia in 2016-17 increased by 5% to 30,801 PJ:

  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) had the largest increase of 41% contributing 9% (2,864 PJ)
  • Black coal remained steady and contributed the most with 39% (12,154 PJ)
  • Natural gas increased by 21% and contributed 14% (4,372 PJ).

Use of energy products

Total use of energy for Australia increased by 8% to 13,309 PJ in 2016-17:
  • Natural gas had the largest increase of 24% and was the main contributor with 33% (4,387 PJ)
  • Black coal increased by 3% and contributed 10% (1,372 PJ)
  • Diesel increased by 4% and contributed 8% (1,080 PJ).

Exports of energy products

Exports of energy products increased 1% to 17,536 PJ in 2016-17:
  • LNG increased by 41% and contributed 16% (2,864 PJ)
  • Black coal decreased by 3% and contributed 61% (10,686 PJ).

Monetary supply of energy and energy assets
  • The value of energy supplied increased by 18% to $218b in 2016-17.
  • Energy assets remained steady in 2016-17 at $230b.
