ABOUT THIS RELEASE

This paper examines the quality of income data from the 2001 Census and follows similar analyses to those provided in previous Census Working Papers examining income data quality: 96/1 (1991) and 00/04 (1996). In these papers data quality is addressed by examining changes in collection or processing procedures, as well as format and sequencing changes to the income question. Analyses of key indicators such as non-response rates, intercensal changes, and comparisons with other sources of income data, provide an indication of data quality. The three comparison sources used in this paper are 1996 Census data, the 1999-2000 Survey of Income and Housing Costs (SIHC), and 1999-2000 Taxation Statistics. Finally, this paper provides suggestions for possible improvements in form design and processing, which could result in higher data quality outcomes for the 2006 Census.
