ABS publication gives key statistics on Queensland regions

While Queensland's 1997 estimated resident population increased by 1.7% to 3,397,071, the highest growth rates occurred in the Gold Coast (3.7%) and Sunshine Coast (3.6%).

This is just a sample of Queensland small area statistics presented in the publication Regional Statistics, Queensland, 1998, released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The publication also shows, for example, that at 30 September the majority of businesses were located in the Brisbane metropolitan area with 77,314 businesses on the ABS business register (38.4%), followed by Moreton division with 39,970 (19.9%).

This latest edition of Regional Statistics, Queensland can be used to find out key economic and social statistics on the State's legal Local Government Areas and selected Statistical Local Areas.

It includes a map of each region according to the Population and Housing Census boundaries as at June 30 1996 and contains important information relating to:
  • Area
  • Population
  • Dwellings
  • Births and deaths
  • Building activity
  • Business locations
  • Agriculture
  • Manufacturing
  • Schools
  • Tourist accommodation
  • Local government, and
  • Motor vehicles.

Other examples of information contained in the publication include:
  • In 1996–97 the Darling Downs division accounted for the largest number (6,854 or 22.1%) of agricultural establishments and contributed the most to the gross value of agricultural commodities produced ($1.4 billion or 24.1%).
  • Logan City had the highest number of dwelling approvals in Brisbane division in 1997–98, with 776 dwelling approvals. Doolandella-Forest Lake also had a high number of dwelling approvals with 729.
  • Cairns metropolitan area had 86 tourist accommodation establishments in 1997–98. These establishments had takings of $163 million which represented over 16% of the State's total.
