August new motor vehicle sales trend firm: ABS

The trend estimate for total new motor vehicle sales increased by 0.8% in August. The main component of the increase was other vehicles, which continued to show strong growth, rising 1.7% since July. New passenger vehicle sales rose marginally (0.3%).

Over the twelve months to August 2002, the trend estimate for total new vehicle sales rose 8.1%. The strongest growth was in Queensland (18.3%), with sales increasing in both passenger vehicles (17.3%) and other vehicles (19.7%). Victoria (-1.5%) and the Northern Territory (-1.0%) were the only state/territory to show negative growth in new passenger vehicle sales over the year.

Seasonally adjusted sales of total new motor vehicles increased by 4.1% in August 2002 with sales of other vehicles increasing by 5.9% and passenger vehicles increasing by 3.2%. Passenger vehicle sales in Tasmania declined by -0.6% in seasonally adjusted terms from July, the only state/territory to do so.
