Census community profile data, free on the net The ABS has today released a new, map-based Internet method of accessing community information from the 1996 Census. Drawing on two of the summary tables from the 1996 Census Basic Community Profile, Internet users can access free of charge data for areas ranging from Statistical Local Areas to all of Australia. Data for local areas can be easily located by clicking onto a map or using a search engine. Using the click on map facility offers a map of Australia that can be zoomed to different locations of interest. Data on demand is available for each location. Should images be switched off in the browser, the names of areas on each map are displayed under the map image and can be opened as required. Alternatively the search engine will provide data directly for a specified area. The ABS has put Help assistance at the bottom of each screen to assist users to understand census geography and data.
