Community-based corrections continue to rise

The number of persons serving community-based corrections orders has increased for the sixth consecutive quarter, according to new Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures.

William Milne, Director of the ABS National Centre for Crime and Justice Statistics, said these orders typically involve compliance with conditions such as community work, supervision or program attendance.

"There were 66,793 persons in community-based corrections during the September quarter 2016, representing an increase of 11 per cent (6,801 persons) from the September quarter 2015," said Mr Milne.

Sentenced probation, which increased 12 per cent from the September quarter 2015, remained the most common community-based corrections order type, accounting for 56 per cent or 40,184 persons in community-based corrections. The second most common order type was parole (14,707 persons), which increased 13 per cent from the September quarter 2015.

"Persons in custody reached 39,005 in the September quarter 2016, representing a marginal increase of less than one per cent from the June quarter 2016, while the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in custody decreased marginally," said Mr Milne.
