Consumer Price Index, Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has discovered an error in the calculation of some seasonally adjusted analytical series in Consumer Price Index, Australia (CPI) (cat. no. 6401.0).The CPI analytical series, the Weighted Median, has been revised to 0.6 per cent in the June quarter 2013 compared to the previously published 0.7 per cent in the June quarter 2013. There is no impact to the non-seasonally adjusted series including the headline CPI.

All affected published series were updated on the ABS website at 11:30am today.

There have also been revisions of up to plus or minus 0.2 per cent to previous quarters movements in the following seasonally adjusted CPI analytical series:
  • All groups CPI, seasonally adjusted,
  • Trimmed mean, and
  • Weighted median.

The error was due to the use of the original instead of the seasonally adjusted movements for the household textiles expenditure class in the calculation of these measures.

The ABS have instigated a full review of the circumstances leading up to the release to understand why the error occurred and to prevent it from happening again.
