Purpose
To estimate the number and operating characteristics of large and special purpose vehicles in Australia.

Description
The survey was conducted in 1996 to obtain vehicle type data comparable to the 1991 ABS Survey of Motor Vehicle Use data.

Data were collected from a sample of 269 vehicles from 102 businesses by mail questionnaire.

Data Detail
Business:

  • Type of business;
  • Industry sector of involvement;
  • Number of employees;
  • Type of freight transported;
  • Number of trailer/platform units; and
  • Number by body type by configuration.

Vehicle:
  • Number of months of operation;
  • Vehicle type by primary use during the past 12 months;
  • Percentage of travel in months of operation;
  • Percentage of travel in each State, area of operation and kilometres from base;
  • Number of axles and gross weight of total vehicle; and
  • Number of axles and tare weight of prime mover.

Geographic Coverage
Australia.

Frequency of Data Availability
The survey has been conducted only once-in 1996.
