User Group Manager’s Report.

Welcome to the CDATA User Group 'Newspoint' - we hope you find it valuable for keeping up to date with the development of CDATA 2001 and other Census electronic product output. We encourage 'User Group Members' to check the 'Messageboard' to track product issues raised by other CDATA User Group Members. Please remember that the easiest way to keep track of new information on the User Group is to either view the documents by date or look in the 'What's New' category in the Information Database.

Since the inception of the CDATA User Group in June 2001, the number of members continues to grow. Some statistics regarding the use of the User Group are as follows:

1. We have now 700+ registered members and the User Group is one of the most patronised areas on the ABS website,
2. We have experienced 10,000+ hits per year, at an average of 28 hits per day, and
3. The average length of time that members spend on the site is approximately 12 mins.

We have had some discussion regarding CDATA 2001 issues; Members and Census Technical Helpline workarounds as noted in the Messageboard, whereby some Members have forwarded and posted some useful information to the User Group. Please feel free at anytime to 'fire-away' a question or two on the Messageboard, albeit feedback regarding Census 2001 products, and/or ideas regarding possible enhancements that can be input for Census Electronic Products, 2006.

We have now seen an end to the CDATA 2001 product development and output phase. The ABS intends to undertake a major review of the products and services from the 2001 Census as part of an overall review of that census. This will serve as an input to the development of the 2006 Census Dissemination Strategy.
During 2004, a comprehensive consultation program will provide users with an opportunity to suggest improvements and to propose new products to meet emerging needs. We encourage User Group members to be involved in this process. We will advise you in the next newsletter how to become involved in this process.

All the best in visiting and using the CDATA User Group!

The CDATA 2001 Release 2 products were released on the 26th of June 2003.

The CDATA 2001 Release 2 - Revision 1.0 patch file contains corrected data (Correction of Prison Data for Queensland). The Revision 1.0 patch file is too large to place on the ABS website. Current CDATA 2001 users should have already received their CDATA 2001 Release 2 - Revision 1.0 CD-ROM.

If you have not received your CDATA 2001 Release 2 – Patch Files CD-ROM by 15/7/2004, please send an email to census.software@abs.gov.au and type CDATA 2001 Release 2 - Patch Files on CD-ROM request in the subject field. Please also include the following details;

Gaining the most benefit from your CDATA 2001 product.

The standard CDATA 2001 package contains data from the Basic Community Profile and Time Series Profile, along with basic digital Base Map Data.

However, a large amount of additional information is available in Add-On Datapacks that have been specifically designed to be quickly and easily imported into CDATA 2001. Add-On Datapacks enable you to get the most out of CDATA 2001.

Each Add-On Datapack focuses on a different set of population characteristics and adds value and flexibility to CDATA 2001 by allowing much more detailed analysis of Australian communities. For example

Expanded Community Profile
The Expanded Community Profile contains a large amount of data about the population characteristics of an area. It includes much more detailed information than the Basic Community Profile, offering many more categories within classifications and data that is cross-classified with more variables – giving you much more versatility to obtain the exact data you want. For example, the Expanded Community Profile Datapack would allow you to map unemployment rates for people born in China, generate a report of the number of female Computing Professionals in each area, and much more. The data is available for Statistical Local Areas and above.

Working Population Profile –
The Working Population Profile contains data on the labour force and employment characteristics of people who work in a particular area. As such, the data is based on a person's place of employment rather than where they live or where they were enumerated on Census night. This Datapack contains a range of information such as industry of employment, income, hours worked, and method of travel to work. It is very useful for identifying business locations, planning transport infrastructure and outdoor advertising campaigns, and much more. Data is available for Statistical Local Areas and above, and Journey to Work Study Areas.

Usual Residents Profile –
This Add-On Datapack contains data that is based on place of usual residence, which may be different to where people were counted on Census night. Data based on place of usual residence is valuable as it more accurately reflects an area's usual characteristics, and is especially useful when examining the population characteristics of holiday areas such as the snowfields or the Gold Coast. The data is available for Statistical Local Areas and above, and Postal Areas.

Indigenous Profile –
The Indigenous Profile Datapack provides key characteristics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, along with data on non-Indigenous Australians for comparison purposes. The Indigenous Profile is available for main geographic areas, as well as Indigenous geography such as ATSIC Regions and Indigenous Locations. This Datapack is useful for organisations planning service delivery, as well as anyone interested in the characteristics of the Indigenous community.

Estimated Resident Population –
The Estimated Resident Population (ERP) Datapack contains population estimates at 30 June 1996 and 2001 by five year age group and sex. The Estimated Resident Population is the official population estimate for Australia, and is available for Statistical Local Areas and above. Unlike the other Datapacks, which are based on 'raw' census data, the ERP Datapack makes an allowance for net census undercount, and takes into account Australian residents who were temporarily overseas when the census was held.

Detailed Base Map
Detailed Base Map data adds greatly to the value of CDATA 2001 by mapping airports, railway stations, schools, churches, hospitals, libraries, rivers and lakes, parks and much more. Compiled by MapInfo Australia from a variety of sources including PSMA Australia, administrative data and their own field surveys, the Detailed Base Map Datapack contains a current and accurate depiction of the national road network, making identification of relevant features faster and more accurate. Detailed Base Map data also increases the scope for much more detailed and meaningful analysis of the census data. For example, you could examine the population characteristics of catchment areas for individual primary schools, or look at the number of people who work in the vicinity of a particular railway station.

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) 2001 -
SEIFA 2001 is a powerful analytical tool that provides a series of summary measures of the socio-economic wellbeing of Australian communities. SEIFA summarises information from the 2001 Census into four indexes that each concentrate on a different aspect of the social and economic conditions in an area. Areas as small as Collection Districts can then be ranked according to their relative socio-economic advantage or disadvantage, making SEIFA ideal for assisting in grant allocation, service provision, and socio-economic research. SEIFA is also extremely useful for identifying business locations or planning marketing campaigns.

SEIFA 2001 is available as an Add-On Datapack for CDATA 2001 or as a standalone software package.

Prices vary depending on the Datapack and geography purchased. For more information, call 1300 135 070 or email client.services@abs.gov.au.
