ACCOMMODATION TAKINGS

September quarter 2013

  • In the September quarter 2013, the trend estimate of total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms decreased by 0.1% to $2246.9 million compared with the June quarter 2013.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate decreased by 1.9% to $2225.1 million.

December quarter 2013
  • In the December quarter 2013, the trend estimate of total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms decreased by 0.1% to $2245.1 million compared with the September quarter 2013.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate increased by 1.6% to $2260.5 million.

March quarter 2014
  • In the March quarter 2014, the trend estimate of total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms increased by 0.1% to $2247.3 million compared with the December quarter 2013.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate decreased by 1.1% to $2236.4 million.

June quarter 2014
  • In the June quarter 2014, the trend estimate of total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms increased by 0.3% to $2254.9 million compared with the March quarter 2014.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate decreased by 1.0% to $2258.1 million.

  • The September quarter 2013 trend estimate room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 64.2% compared with the June quarter 2013.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate decreased by 0.8 percentage points to 64.0%.

December quarter 2013
  • The December quarter 2013 trend estimate room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 64.1% compared with the September quarter 2013.
  • Over the same period, the seasonally adjusted estimate increased by 0.2 percentage points to 64.2%.

Accommodation takings

September quarter 2013

In the September quarter 2013, accommodation takings were $2257.7 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. Accommodation takings were highest in New South Wales ($703.3 million) and Queensland ($585.8 million). Tasmania recorded the lowest takings for the period ($39.4 million). For Australia, the September quarter 2013 average takings per room night occupied were $165.01 for establishments with 15 or more rooms. This was 0.6% higher than the September quarter 2012 ($164.07).

December quarter 2013

In the December quarter 2013, accommodation takings were $2373.0 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. Accommodation takings were highest in New South Wales ($796.9 million) and Queensland ($575.4 million). Australian Capital Territory recorded the lowest takings for the period ($54.3 million). For Australia, the December quarter 2013 average takings per room night occupied were $172.10 for establishments with 15 or more rooms. This was 2.4% higher than the December quarter 2012 ($168.03).

March quarter 2014

In the March quarter 2014, accommodation takings were $2263.3 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. Accommodation takings were highest in New South Wales ($777.2 million) and Queensland ($499.8 million). Northern Territory recorded the lowest takings for the period ($47.3 million). For Australia, the March quarter 2014 average takings per room night occupied were $171.31 for establishments with 15 or more rooms. This was 1.7% higher than the March quarter 2013 ($168.38).

June quarter 2014

In the June quarter 2014, accommodation takings were $2088.6 million for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. Accommodation takings were highest in New South Wales ($677.2 million) and Queensland ($493.9 million). Tasmania recorded the lowest takings for the period ($47.5 million). For Australia, the June quarter 2014 average takings per room night occupied were $163.48 for establishments with 15 or more rooms. This was 0.6% higher than the June quarter 2013 ($162.55).

Room occupancy rate

September quarter 2013

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 64.9% in the September quarter 2013. This was a decrease of 2.0 percentage points compared with September quarter 2012.

Traditionally, hotels have higher occupancy rates than motels or serviced apartments. Over the September quarter 2013, hotels had an occupancy rate of 71.9% compared with 55.9% for motels and 67.5% for serviced apartments. Six out of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in the occupancy rate of hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms between the September quarter 2012 and the September quarter 2013. Western Australia (63.1%) experienced the largest decrease (7.6 percentage points).

Over the same period, occupancy in Victoria (65.2%) and Tasmania (46.8%) increased by 1.7 percentage points and 0.2 percentage points respectively. The Northern Territory recorded the highest occupancy rate (74.0%) in the September quarter 2013 followed by the Australian Capital Territory (71.5%). Over the same period, Tasmania (46.8%) experienced the lowest occupancy rate.

December quarter 2013

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 65.7% in the December quarter 2013. This was a decrease of 1.3 percentage points compared with December quarter 2012.

Over the December quarter 2013, hotels had an occupancy rate of 73.0% compared with 56.4% for motels and 68.2% for serviced apartments. Four out of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in the occupancy rate of hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms between the December quarter 2012 and the December quarter 2013. Western Australia (63.7%) experienced the largest decrease (5.2 percentage points).

Over the same period, occupancy in Tasmania (63.0%) and Victoria (68.6%) increased by 1.1 percentage points and 1.0 percentage points respectively. Victoria (68.6%) recorded the highest occupancy rate in the December quarter 2013 followed by New South Wales (67.7%). Over the same period, Northern Territory (61.0%) experienced the lowest occupancy rate.

March quarter 2014

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 64.4% in the March quarter 2014. This was a decrease of 1.1 percentage points compared with March quarter 2013.

Over the March quarter 2014, hotels had an occupancy rate of 72.0% compared with 55.2% for motels and 66.2% for serviced apartments. Four out of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in the occupancy rate of hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms between the March quarter 2013 and the March quarter 2014. Western Australia (61.8%) experienced the largest decrease (5.0 percentage points), followed by Australian Capital Territory (65.4%) which was down by 4.5 percentage points.

Over the same period, occupancy in Tasmania (72.2%) and South Australia (63.4%) increased by 1.6 percentage points and 1.1 percentage points respectively. Tasmania (72.2%) recorded the highest occupancy rate in the March quarter 2014 followed by Victoria (70.3%). Over the same period, Northern Territory (52.4%) experienced the lowest occupancy rate.

June quarter 2014

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms was 61.5% in the June quarter 2014. This was a decrease of 0.5 percentage points compared with June quarter 2013.

Over the June quarter 2014, hotels had an occupancy rate of 68.3% compared with 53.4% for motels and 62.7% for serviced apartments. Five out of the eight states and territories experienced a decrease in the occupancy rate of hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms between the June quarter 2013 and the June quarter 2014. Australian Capital Territory (63.3%) experienced the largest decrease (4.9 percentage points), followed by Northern Territory (65.5%) which was down by 2.9 percentage points.

Over the same period, occupancy in South Australia (59.0%) and Victoria (64.8%) increased by 1.8 percentage points and 1.4 percentage points respectively. Northern Territory (65.5%) recorded the highest occupancy rate in the June quarter 2014 followed by Victoria (64.8%). Over the same period, Tasmania (51.8%) experienced the lowest occupancy rate.

Room nights Occupied

September quarter 2013

Room nights occupied were 13.7 million in the September quarter 2013 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. New South Wales contributed the largest proportion (30.7%) of room nights occupied for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Queensland (27.6%).

December quarter 2013

Room nights occupied were 13.8 million in the December quarter 2013 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. New South Wales contributed the largest proportion (31.6%) of room nights occupied for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Queensland (26.0%).

March quarter 2014

Room nights occupied were 13.2 million in the March quarter 2014 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. New South Wales contributed the largest proportion (32.0%) of room nights occupied for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Queensland (24.4%).

June quarter 2014

Room nights occupied were 12.8 million in the June quarter 2014 for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms. New South Wales contributed the largest proportion (31.4%) of room nights occupied for hotels, motels and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms, followed by Queensland (25.5%).
