Accommodation takings

The trend estimate of the total accommodation takings for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined increased by 8.3% to $1,404.4 million in June quarter 2004 compared with June quarter 2003.

The seasonally adjusted estimate of the total accommodation takings rose by 10.3% to $1,403.6 million from June quarter 2003 to June quarter 2004.

Room occupancy rate

The trend estimate of the room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined rose by 2.1 percentage points from 59.4% in June quarter 2003 to 61.5% in June quarter 2004.

The seasonally adjusted estimate of the room occupancy rate increased by 3.3 percentage points to 61.6% from June quarter 2003 to June quarter 2004.

Accommodation takings

In June quarter 2004, accommodation takings for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were $1,277.5 million. This was an increase of 10.2% ($118.0 million) from June quarter 2003. The average takings per room night occupied for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined was $118.20.

Hotels were the highest contributor to accommodation takings with $627.8 million (49.1%). Takings per room night occupied in June quarter 2004 were highest for hotels at $139.30.

The contributions of accommodation takings in June quarter 2004 for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined were highest in New South Wales (33.6%) and Queensland (27.2%) and lowest in Tasmania (2.5%).

Room nights occupied

Total room nights occupied were 10.8 million in June quarter 2004 for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined. Room nights occupied increased by 6.1% (0.6 million) from June quarter 2003 to June quarter 2004.

Hotels represented 4.5 million (41.7%) of the total room nights occupied, while motels and guest houses represented 4.0 million (37.2%) and serviced apartments represented 2.3 million (21.1%).

Room occupancy rate

The room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined increased 3.1 percentage points to 58.4% in June quarter 2004 compared with June quarter 2003.

The Australian Capital Territory recorded the highest room occupancy rate for hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments combined with 65.9%. This was followed by Queensland (61.3%) and the Northern Territory (60.0%).

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents results from the quarterly Survey of Tourist Accommodation (STA). The scope of the STA includes hotels, motels and guest houses and serviced apartments with 15 or more rooms.

For 2004 the STA includes the following categories of establishments which provide predominantly short-term non-residential accommodation to the general public:
  • hotels and resorts with facilities and 15 or more rooms
  • motels, private hotels and guest houses with facilities and 15 or more rooms
  • serviced apartments with 15 or more units.
