JULY KEY POINTS


TOTAL DWELLING UNITS
  • The trend estimate for total dwellings approved fell 3.2% in July.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for total dwellings approved fell 9.7% in July.


PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
  • The trend estimate for private sector houses approved fell 1.0% in July.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for private sector houses fell 3.3% in July.


PRIVATE SECTOR DWELLINGS EXCLUDING HOUSES
  • The trend estimate for private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 7.3% in July.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for private sector dwellings excluding houses fell 18.4% in July.


VALUE OF BUILDING APPROVED
  • The trend estimate of the value of total building approved fell 1.0% in July and has fallen for four months. The value of residential building fell 1.9% and has fallen for 19 months. The value of non-residential building rose 0.3% and has risen for 11 months.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building approved fell 7.3% in July. The value of residential building fell 5.4%, while the value of non-residential building fell 9.9%.

Small area data cubes and CSV files will be made available in an “Additional Information” release five business days after the main publication. These will be for Statistical Area Level 2 and Local Government Areas. Release dates are published under the “Forthcoming Issues” section of the publication and in ABS Release Advice.

Important changes to Victoria's building permit application process commenced on 1 July 2019. These changes affect the Building Act 1993 (Vic.) and the Building Regulations 2018. More information about the changes can be found on the Victorian Building Authority website.

A number of time series spreadsheets contain ‘np’ (not available for publication) annotations. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
