PRELIMINARY KEY POINTS
  • The gross value of wheat in Australia has fallen to $6.9 billion, with production in Western Australia returning to more normal levels after a bumper crop in 2013-14.
  • Canola gross value has declined 18 per cent to $1.7 billion off the back of low production and a reduction in international demand. The decline has been seen across most states with the exception of South Australia and Tasmania.
  • Sorghum has seen a 70 per cent increase in gross value to $655 million driven by increased production in Queensland and exports continuing to attract a premium price.
  • The gross value of disposals of cattle and calves increased rapidly from $8.5 billion in 2013-14 to $11.5 billion in 2014-15, driven by higher prices for cattle products following strong international demand.
  • The national gross value of sheep and lambs has risen to $3.3 billion to continue the 4 year high. This increase was mainly driven by a high rate of turn-off in spring which led to lower lamb availability in the 2014-15 summer.
