Direct tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP), in volume terms, increased by 4.9%, compared with real GDP growth of 2.0%.
Direct tourism gross value added at basic prices, in volume terms increased by 4.9%, compared to gross value added for all industries which increased by 2.2%.
Internal tourism consumption (total domestic and international consumption in Australia) in volume terms, increased by 4.3%. Of this figure, domestic tourism consumption increased by 3.5% while international tourism consumption grew by 6.3%.
Direct tourism gross value added per hour worked (a measure of tourism labour productivity) increased by 2.9% compared to growth for the whole economy of 0.9%.
CURRENT PRICE MEASURES
Direct tourism GDP increased by 6.1% to $55,283m, compared with GDP growth of 5.7%.
Tourism share of GDP increased to 3.2% from 3.1%.
INDUSTRY GROSS VALUE ADDED
Direct tourism gross value added increased by 6.1% to $50,642m.
Internal tourism consumption increased by 5.3% to $135,502m.
Domestic tourism consumption increased by 4.5% to $98,302m.
Tourism exports (international tourism consumption in Australia) increased by 7.6% to $37,200m.
Tourism imports (outbound tourism consumption by Australian residents on outbound trips) increased by 3.9% to $48,610m.
Tourism employed persons increased by approximately 17,500 employees to 598,200 employed persons.
Tourism share of total employment remains unchanged at 4.9%.
Hours worked in tourism increased by 2.0%, compared with an increase of 1.3% for the overall economy.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
To bring the release date of this publication forward, a small number of changes were made to some tables and product detail in this release. The changes mainly relate to data already published elsewhere by the ABS or which can be easily derived using other data in the release. These changes include:
Table 5 TOURISM SHARE OF INDUSTRY GROSS VALUE ADDED - Gross Value Added is no longer published in dollar ($m) terms as it is published elsewhere. Only the tourism share of industry gross value added is included.
Table 16 TOURISM GROSS VALUE ADDED, By tourism related industry, hours worked and GVA per hour worked - Chain Volume Indexes by industry are no longer published as these can be derived as per the Chain Volume Measures by industry published in Table 4. Chain Volume Indexes for hours worked and GVA per hour worked have now moved to table 11.

In addition to the table changes above, this release includes some changes to tourism characteristic and tourism connected products to streamline some products classifications. The below product aggregations are included in tables 6 - 10 of this release. The changes include:
Recreational, cultural and sporting services, along with Gambling and betting services becomes Recreational, cultural and gambling services;
Food products, along with Alcoholic beverages and other beverages becomes Food, Alcohol and other beverage products; and,
Fuel (petrol, diesel), along with Repair and maintenance of motor vehicles becomes Repair, maintenance and fuel for motor vehicles.
A number of revisions have also occurred in this release due to a number of historical revisions in key TSA sources. See the Revisions in this Issue for more detail.
