ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 22 November 2017. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the September quarter 2017 will be released in the next release of this publication, Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 11 April 2018.

CHANGES THIS ISSUE

A new base year, 2015-16, has been introduced in the chain volume estimates resulting in revisions to growth rates in subsequent periods. In addition, the chain volume estimates have been re-referenced to 2015-16, preserving additivity in the quarters after the reference year. Re-referencing affects the levels of, but not the movements in, chain volume estimates. For further information, see the explanatory notes.

SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE

Compared to the estimate published in Building Activity, Australia June quarter 2017 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 11 October 2017:
  • the total value of work done in Australia during the June quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by $443.3m or 1.5%.
  • the total value of work commenced in Australia during the June quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by $1,314.3m or 4.6%. This was driven by a 4.1% ($744.1m) revision to total residential commencements and a 5.6% ($570.2m) revision to non-residential commencements.
  • the number of dwelling unit commencements in the June quarter 2017 has been revised upwards by 1,595 dwellings or 3.1%.
