CDATA User Group Manager’s Report

Thank you to those clients who have joined the CDATA User Group. The majority of clients completed the registration process successfully, gaining access to the User Group in the first instance. Unfortunately a few clients experienced some problems registering but these were easily rectified. Some clients also experienced problems when entering the CDATA User Group via their internet browsers. If you have any problems when attempting to enter the CDATA User Group, please call the CDATA User Group Manager on (02) 6252 6015.

The CDATA User Group has been a popular web site, thanks to you! On an average basis for the month of July, the User Group site experienced approx. 300+ hits per day, which is approx. 12 000+ hits per month. Over a 24 hour period, the web site was hit during every hour! An average of 6 Members at the one time have been using the site.

Thank you to those User Group Members who have provided some very positive feedback regarding the use of the CDATA User Group site. I would like to encourage Members to use the CDATA User Group Messageboard for raising queries, or forwarding on any information that may be helpful for other CDATA User Group Members. The User Group Information Database and Messageboard are checked daily, ensuring a timely response (within 24 hours) from the Census Technical Helpline Team.

I hope that you and future Members continue to use the CDATA User Group site as it will continue to expand with relevant information, detailing the latest developments of all Census Electronic Products from the 2001 Census.

CDATA User Group Manager.

NSW Geography Teachers Association Conference

Neville Voysey and Cate Owen from the Census Technical Helpline team attended the Geography Teachers Association of NSW conference in Sydney on 10 - 11 August. The intention was to raise awareness of Census data and GIS for use in high school Geography lessons. The overall feedback at the Conference was positive and many teachers said they were keen to get their students using GIS software. The Helpline team aims to have a similar presence at the National Geography Teachers Association Conference in Melbourne early next year.

The Census Guide (Cat No. 2914.0.30.001)

The Census Guide was released on 3 September. It is a FREE CD-ROM designed specifically for use with the 2001 Census data. The Census Guide is the ultimate source of reference information about the 2001 Census. It provides you with a range of 2001 Census reference materials, product and service information, and access to the Census Tabulation Specification Service (CTSS) software.

The Census Guide makes it easy for you to find the information you need and is an essential reference tool in promoting a greater understanding and more informed use of census data. The Census Guide utilises WebRom Technology and is displayed using your web browser software. You can navigate and search the CD exactly as you would a normal Web Site. The Census Guide is available at your nearest ABS Bookshop in your capital city, or you can request it by calling 1800 813 939.

Census Day was a Success!

The 2001 Census output program will format the data into tables for inclusion in a wide range of products. See the Census Guide for details.

The proposed date for the first release of Census data is July 2002. The proposed date for Release 1 of CDATA2001 products is September 2002.

MapInfo v. 6.5 Patch*

MapInfo has developed the 6.5.0.1909 patch for MapInfo Professional v 6.5 users. This patch fixes three problems with version 6.5 which are:

1. A problem that occurs when MapInfo Professional v 6.5 performs a join of 3 or more tables (SQL’s).
2. Certain workspaces open more slowly in MapInfo Professional v 6.5 than in previous versions.
3. MapInfo Professional v 6.5 may have an error message “System Error:Floating Point Exception: Invalid" when using the Buffer Tool in MapInfo. This is more likely to occur on Windows 95 and 98.

This patch includes and supersedes the previously available patch (6.5.0.1908):

You can safely install this patch even if you have not already downloaded and installed the 6.5.0.1908 patch
