PERMANENT MIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA - AN OVERVIEW BY ELIGIBILITY CATEGORY
This article reviews the recent trends in migration to Australia, specifically with regard to a migrant's visa class category. The article includes the following:

  • Immigration to Australia;
  • The Permanent Migration Program and outcomes by visa eligibility;
  • Onshore residence outcomes and outcomes by visa eligibility; and
  • New Zealand citizens.

SKILLED MIGRATION
This article describes key trends in the skilled migration of overseas born individuals to Australia. The article examines the permanent skilled migration program and the characteristics of skilled migrants between 1997-98 to 2007-08. In particular:
  • Targeting skilled workers; and
  • The characteristics of skilled settlers.

MIGRANT CHARACTERISTICS AND SETTLEMENT OUTCOMES OF SECONDARY APPLICANTS
This article focuses on the settlement outcomes of secondary migrants compared to primary applicants. The article considers the following:
  • How many primary and secondary applicant migrants are there?;
  • Are application patterns different for different visa types or for different countries of birth?;
  • What is the sex and age of migrants?;
  • How well do migrants speak English and do they hold an educational qualification?;
  • Are migrants employed in Australia and how long did it take to find employment?;
  • What occupations do migrants work in?;
  • What is the main source of income for migrants?; and
  • Do migrants have social networks and support in Australia?

TEMPORARY MIGRANTS IN AUSTRALIA
This article provides an overview of the temporary migration program and broadly explains the types of temporary visas that exist and the differences between them. The article examines:
  • Temporary migration;
  • Visitors, their contribution to the temporary migration program and where they come from;
  • Temporary migrants;
  • Working holiday makers, their contribution to the temporary migration program and where they come from;
  • Students, their contribution to the temporary migration program and where they come from;
  • Business migrants, their contribution to the temporary migration program, where they come from, where they are going and their employment characteristics; and
  • The pathway to permanent residence.
