2018 KEY POINTS
    • There were 19.2 million registered motor vehicles in Australia as at 31 January 2018.
    • The national vehicle fleet grew by 2.1 per cent between 2017 and 2018.
    • Toyota topped the list of passenger vehicle makes for the 13th consecutive year with 2.9 million registrations.
    • Diesel powered vehicles constitute 23.4 per cent of the national fleet, up from 17.2 per cent in 2013.


STATES AND TERRITORIES
    • The number of registered vehicles increased in all states and territories.
    • The large increase in registrations for the Northern Territory is due to an identified undercount in 2017. Refer to TECHNICAL NOTE - Northern Territory 2017 Motor Vehicle Census Data Undercount.
    • Excluding the Northern Territory, Victoria reported the largest growth in registered vehicles increasing by 2.6 per cent.

FUEL TYPE

    • Petrol powered vehicles decreased by 1.1 percentage points to 74.6 per cent of the national fleet.
    • Diesel powered vehicles increased by 1.3 percentage points to 23.4 per cent of the Australian fleet and remains the fastest growing fuel type.

VEHICLE TYPE

    • Light rigid trucks reported the largest growth rate of any vehicle type, increasing by 5.1 per cent, followed by Campervans with 4.6 per cent.
    • Passenger vehicles increased by 1.8 per cent however, their share of the national fleet fell 0.3 percentage points to 74.7 per cent of all registered vehicles.

AVERAGE AGE

    • Average age of all vehicles registered in Australia was 10.1 years, unchanged since 2015.
    • Tasmanian vehicles reported the oldest average age at 12.8 years, whilst the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory had the youngest fleet with an average age of 9.4 years.

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents statistics relating to vehicles which were registered at 31 January 2018 with a motor vehicle registration authority. Motor vehicle registration statistics reflect the information as recorded in registration documents and reported to the ABS by the relevant Motor Vehicle Registry. Unusual movements in registration counts are queried and confirmed with the relevant Motor Vehicle Registry.

Statistics are provided on vehicle types comprising passenger vehicles, campervans, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and motor cycles. Vehicle characteristic information includes make of vehicle, year of manufacture, type of fuel that the vehicle was registered as using, and Gross Vehicle Mass or Gross Combination Mass for trucks. The size of the motor vehicle fleet is also compared with the estimated resident population.
