BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of total building work done rose 1.5% in the June 2016 quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done rose 1.2% to $26,069.3m in the June quarter, following a rise of 1.4% in the March 2016 quarter.


NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 2.1% in the June quarter. The value of work done on new houses was flat while new other residential building rose 4.5%.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 0.2% to $15,060.3m. Work done on new houses rose 0.7% to $7,976.6m, while new other residential building fell 0.2% to $7,083.6m.


NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done rose 0.5% in the June quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter rose 2.4%, following a fall of 2.2% in the March 2016 quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
  • The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 0.8% in the June 2016 quarter following a flat movement in the March quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 9.5% to 55,110 dwellings in the June quarter following a rise of 8.0% in the March quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
  • The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 2.2% in the June quarter following a rise of 1.3% in the March quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 6.7% to 29,831 dwellings in the June quarter following a rise of 1.4% in the March quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
  • The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements fell 4.4% in the June quarter following a fall of 1.5% in the March quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building fell 24.4% to 23,605 dwellings in the June quarter following a rise of 13.4% in the March quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 24 August 2016. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 90% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the June quarter 2016 will be released in the next release of this publication, Building Activity, Australia(cat. no. 8752.0) on 18 January 2017.


SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE

Compared to the estimate published in Building Activity, Australia March quarter 2016 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 13 July 2016:
  • the total value of work done in Australia during the March quarter 2016 has been revised upwards by $580m or 2.4%.
  • the total value of work commenced in Australia during the March quarter 2016 has been revised upwards by $1,536.8m or 5.6%. This was driven by a 5.6% ($1,011.5m) revision to total residential commencements and a 5.7% ($525.3m) revision to non-residential commencements.
  • the number of dwelling unit commencements in the March quarter 2016 has been revised upwards by 2,266 dwellings or 4.1%.


DATA NOTE

Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations from the September quarter 2012 onwards. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.
