WEB PRESENCE

The ABS defines businesses with a web presence as those with a website, home page or other web presence, but excludes those listed solely as part of an online listing. Web presence also explicitly excludes those that have a social media presence as their only web presence.

Consistent with previous years results, 47% of businesses had a web presence in 2013-14.

Graph: proportion of businesses with a web presence, by employment size, 2011-12 to 2013-14. Businesses with 200 or more persons employed were almost three times as likely as businesses with 0-4 persons employed to have a web presence.

The likelihood that a business had a web presence increased with each successive employment size range. As at 30 June 2014, over a third of businesses with 0-4 persons employed had a web presence (37%), compared with 97% of businesses with 200 or more persons employed.

Graph: proportion of businesses with a web presence, by industry, 2013-14. Across industries, this ranged from 13% in Agriculture, forestry and fishing to 74% in Information media and telecommunications.

Businesses in the Information media and telecommunications industry were the most likely to have a web presence (74%), followed by those in the Arts and recreation services industry (66%). Businesses in the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry were the least likely to have a web presence (13%).
