NOTES

INTRODUCTION

This release presents counts of actively trading businesses in the market sector of the Australian economy, from the end of June 2014 to the end of June 2018. Statistics in this release are sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Register (ABSBR). Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits (cat no 8165.0), was initially released in February 2007. This series replaces all previous business counts releases, which can be found under the 'Past and Future Releases' tab.

This release contains snapshots of counts of active businesses at regular points in time. While data presented in this release were produced on a broadly similar conceptual basis to data presented in previous releases, users seeking to analyse change over time should be aware that there have been methodological, classificatory, definitional, administrative and content changes between the different releases of CABEE.

CHANGES FROM THE PREVIOUS RELEASE

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) changes
Changes to the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) classification in 2016 were first used in 2012-16 CABEE (see Explanatory Notes). This classification is used again in 2014-18 CABEE. This release uses the latest July 2018 ASGS index.
