NOTES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents estimates of the economic and financial performance of Australian industry for 2012-13. These estimates are compiled from the Economic Activity Survey (EAS) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and from Business Activity Statement (BAS) data reported to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

The estimates in this publication are based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition (cat. no. 1292.0).

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

This is the first release of Australian Industry (cat. no. 8155.0) that does not include a Portable Document Format (PDF) component. From this issue, Australian Industry will be web-based. All published data can now be found within the attached data cubes under the Downloads tab above. There have been some additions and changes to data cubes to ensure that all data previously included in the PDF can now be sourced from the data cubes.

Extra tables have been added to the data cube 'Australian industry by division' that in previous releases were included only in the PDF. Changes have also been made to some tables in this data cube.

Changes have also been made to some tables in the 'Australian industry by subdivision' data cube.

A new data cube 'Off-June Year adjusted estimates by ANZSIC subdivision' contains estimates adjusted for the impacts of off-June year reporting.

See the separate sections below for more details about each data cube.

AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY BY DIVISION DATA CUBE

Additional tables included in the 'Australian industry by division' data cube for the first time in this release are Labour Costs by Industry Division, Industry Value Added by Industry Division and Industry Performance by Industry Division.

The Industry Value Added by Industry Division table has been updated to include a breakdown of Capital work done for own use into the components: Capitalised wages and salaries, and Capitalised purchases. This change has been implemented for all reference years within this issue.

The Industry Performance by Industry Division table in this release contains changes to the data item Purchases of goods and materials. This new item includes Capitalised purchases, whereas the Purchases item in previous releases did not. To complement this change and ensure additivity within the table, a new item Capital work done for own use has replaced Capitalised wages and salaries. These changes have been implemented for all reference years within this issue.

AUSTRALIAN INDUSTRY BY SUBDIVISION DATA CUBE

The Industry Value Added by Industry Subdivision table has been updated to include a breakdown of Capital work done for own use into the components: Capitalised wages and salaries, and Capitalised purchases. This change has been implemented for all reference years within this issue.

The Industry Performance by Industry Subdivision table in this release contains changes to the data item Purchases of goods and materials. This new item includes Capitalised purchases, whereas the Purchases item in previous releases did not. To complement this change and ensure additivity within the table, a new item Capital work done for own use has replaced Capitalised wages and salaries. These changes have been implemented for all reference years within this issue.
OFF-JUNE YEAR ADJUSTED ESTIMATES BY ANZSIC SUBDIVISION DATA CUBE

The 2012-13 EAS has a reference period ending 30 June 2013 and the majority of businesses report for this reference period. In some industries though, a proportion of businesses report for a different reference period, for example the reference period ending 31 March 2013. 'Off-June year reporting' is more prevalent in industries with a high degree of foreign ownership, such as Mining and Manufacturing. EAS estimates are based on the actual reporting period for all businesses.

Estimates adjusted for the impacts of off-June year reporting have been released in the 'Off-June Year adjusted estimates by ANZSIC subdivision' data cube attached to this release. Previously, these estimates were released in Experimental Estimates for Australian Industry adjusted for Off-June Year reporting 2011-12 (cat. no. 8169.0).

INDUSTRY PROFILES

The ABS conducts a rotating program of detailed industry surveys. For the 2012-13 financial year, the ABS undertook surveys into the Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade industries (ANZSIC Divisions F and G respectively) and the Tourism and Non-Profit Institutions sectors. The Retail and Wholesale industry data will be released by the ABS (in cat. no. 8622.0) in mid 2014. The Tourism data will be released by the ABS as a Satellite Account (in cat. no. 5249.0) in late 2014, and the Non-Profit Institutions data will be released by the ABS as a Satellite Account (in cat. no. 5256.0) in June 2014. For 2013-14, the ABS will be conducting a survey of the Information Media and Telecommunications industry (ANZSIC Division J), and these results are expected to be released in mid 2015.
