INTRODUCTION

This release presents results for Household Use of Information Technology (HUIT) collected via the Multipurpose Household Survey (MPHS) for 2014–15.

STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE

There are two components to this release: summary information on household internet access and persons internet use; and detailed data cubes. Data used in graphs and commentary are included in the detailed data presented in the data cubes.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The dynamic nature of the HUIT content leads to changes to the information collected between surveys. Changes in this issue include:

  • new data items (reasons for not having internet access at home, type of device used to access the internet at home, number of devices used to access the internet at home, hours spent online in a typical week, number of transactions made purchasing or ordering goods or services online, whether employed persons accessed the internet for home based work);
  • a new definition of 'internet user' (for 2014-15 the definition is persons aged 15 years and over who accessed the internet for personal use in a typical week, whereas previously internet users are persons aged 15 years and over who accessed the internet in the last 12 months);
  • a reduction in the reference period for 'reasons for using the internet' from 12 months to 3 months. This was changed to align with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) suggested reference period to improve international comparability;
  • the identification of the population of 'those who purchased goods or services online';
  • changed response categories for types of goods or services purchased or ordered online.
