From the period 2002-03 to 2004-05, nominal wages and salaries from manufacturing have steadily increased. Over this period, the industry sub-sectors that have increased by the largest proportions are: Non-metallic mineral product manufacturing (51.7% increase); Machinery and equipment manufacturing (27.8% increase); and Other manufacturing (20.0% increase).

In 2004-05, the biggest contributor to wages and salaries remained Food, beverage and tobacco manufacturing which accounted for $210m (23.3% of total manufacturing wages and salaries), despite a decline of $10m over the previous year.
