STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

In the September quarter 2016, the Final demand index rose 0.3%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.6% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.6%. Through the year to the September quarter 2016, the Final demand index rose 0.5%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.2% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.1%.

The rise of 0.3% in the Final demand index in the September quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.5% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 1.2% in the prices of imported products.

The domestic component recorded rises in the prices for other agriculture which includes bananas, beans and tomatoes (+8.9%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+11.9%) and electricity supply, gas supply and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (+1.7%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-4.9%) and water freight transport (-12.1%).

The imports component recorded falls in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-1.8%), cigarette and tobacco product manufacturing (-5.0%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-6.9%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for cleaning compound and toiletry preparation manufacturing (+4.1%), pump, compressor, heating and ventilation equipment manufacturing (+3.1%) and motor vehicle and part manufacturing (+0.2%).

The rise of 0.6% in the Intermediate demand index in the September quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.9% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.5% in the prices of imported products.

The domestic component recorded rises in the prices for electricity supply, gas supply and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (+1.2%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+4.4%) and other agriculture which includes bananas, beans and tomatoes (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the price for water freight transport (-10.7%), other administrative services (-1.1%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (-1.1%).

The imports component recorded falls in the prices for polymer product manufacturing (-5.5%), computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-2.5%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (-2.1%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in other wood product manufacturing (+9.0%), petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+2.9%) and oil and gas extraction (+3.0%).

The rise of 0.6% in the Preliminary demand index in the September quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.8% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.7% in the prices of imported products.

The domestic component recorded rises in the prices for electricity supply, gas supply and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (+1.2%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+3.5%) and basic non-ferrous metal manufacturing (+6.2%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in water freight transport (-10.2%), basic non-ferrous metal product manufacturing (-1.5%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (-1.2%).

The imports component recorded falls in the prices for polymer product manufacturing (-5.8%), non-metallic mineral product manufacturing (-6.8%) and computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (-2.5%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (+6.4%), oil and gas extraction (+2.9%) and petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+2.1%).
