STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

In the March quarter 2016, the Final demand index fell 0.2%, the Intermediate demand index fell 0.4% and the Preliminary demand index fell 0.4%. Through the year to the March quarter 2016, the Final demand index rose 1.2%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.8% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.6%.

The fall of 0.2% in the Final demand index in the March quarter 2016 reflected a fall of 0.2% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.2% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-15.1%) and Other agriculture (-6.8%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for Real estate services (+1.4%), Building construction (+0.2%) and Furniture and other manufacturing (+0.3). The imports component recorded falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-18.4%), Pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-5.2%) and Cigarette and tobacco product manufacturing (-4.4%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for Motor vehicle and motor vehicle part manufacturing ( +2.0%), Other machinery and equipment manufacturing (+2.0%) and Professional and scientific equipment manufacturing (+1.9%).

The fall of 0.4% in the Intermediate demand index in the March quarter 2016 reflected a rise of 0.1% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 3.0% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for Real estate services (+1.5%), Other agriculture (+2.3%) and Other basic chemical product manufacturing (+4.8%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-19.3%), Basic polymer manufacturing (-8.1%) and Employment services (-1.0%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-23.2%), Oil and gas extraction (-25.0%) and Pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-16.1%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for Textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+0.4%), and Electrical equipment manufacturing (+2.3%).

The fall of 0.4% in the Preliminary demand index in the March quarter 2016 reflected no change in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 2.6% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for Metal ore mining (+5.7%), Meat and meat product manufacturing (+4.1%) and Real estate services (+1.5%). Offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-14.9%), Basic polymer manufacturing (-7.6%) and Oil and gas extraction (-6.2%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices received for Petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-23.0%) and Oil and gas extraction (-25.0%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for Textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+0.4%), Electrical equipment manufacturing (+1.8%) and Professional and scientific equipment manufacturing (+3.0%).
