APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES


In May 2012, there were 219,300 people aged 15–64 years who were employed as apprentices or trainees and part of the Australian Apprenticeship Scheme. Of these, 105,300 people (48%) had commenced their apprenticeship or traineeship in the last 12 months. The majority of apprentices or trainees (77%) were male. The highest number of apprentices and trainees (69,400) were working within the Construction industry. (Table 21)

There were 19,400 people who gained a place for an apprenticeship/traineeship but were not undertaking it in May 2012, while 42,200 people who applied for an apprenticeship/traineeship were unsuccessful in gaining a place in 2012. (Table 22)
