APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES

In May 2014, there were 181,700 people aged 15–64 years who were employed as apprentices or trainees and part of the Australian Apprenticeship Scheme. Of these, 78,100 people (43%) had commenced their apprenticeship or traineeship in the last 12 months. The majority of apprentices or trainees were male (84%). The highest number of apprentices and trainees were working in the Construction industry (61,500). (Table 19)

There were 19,700 people who gained a place for an apprenticeship/traineeship but were not undertaking it in May 2014, while 35,300 people who applied for an apprenticeship/traineeship were unsuccessful in gaining a place in 2014. (Table 20)
