AUSTRALIA'S SEASONALLY ADJUSTED UNEMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASED TO 5.6% IN MARCH 2013
Australia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 5.6% in March 2013. This was an increase of 0.2 percentage points from February 2013. The trend unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5%. The number of people unemployed increased by 25,900 to 686,900 in March 2013 (seasonally adjusted).
March 2013 also saw a decrease in the seasonally adjusted participation rate of 0.2 percentage points to 65.1%. The trend participation rate remained unchanged at 65.1% in March 2013.
The number of employed people decreased by 36,100 in March 2013 to 11,592,700 people (seasonally adjusted). This followed an increase of 74,000 in February in the number of employed people. In trend terms, employment increased by 12,600 or more for the fifth consecutive month.
Both part-time and full-time seasonally adjusted employment decreased in March 2013, with part-time employment down 28,700 people to 3,481,500 people and full-time employment down 7,400 to 8,111,300 people. The decrease in total employment was mainly driven by decreases in male part-time (down 28,200) and female full-time (down 15,200) employment.
The largest decreases in employment were seen in Victoria and Queensland, with decreases of 9,300 and 7,400 people respectively (seasonally adjusted).
Consistent with the decrease in total employment, seasonally adjusted aggregate hours worked decreased 5.0 million hours in March 2013 to 1,627.3 million hours.
