SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS


CONSOLIDATED ASSETS

  • Total consolidated assets of managed funds institutions was $1,378.9b at 30 September 2007, an increase of $24.3b (2%) on the revised June quarter 2007 figure of $1,354.6b.
  • Consolidated assets of superannuation funds increased by $20.2b (3%), public unit trusts were up by $2.5b (1%), life insurance offices up by $1.6b (1%), common funds by $0.3b (3%), cash management trusts down $0.2b (1%) and friendly societies down by $0.1b (2%).
  • Investment in equities and units in trusts increased by $22.4b (4%). Other increases were recorded in assets overseas, up $5.2b (2%), land and buildings, up $4.0b (3%) and short-term securities, up $1.1b (1%). Decreases occurred in other assets, down $5.6b (12%) and cash and deposits, down $1.7b (1%). During the September quarter 2007, the S&P/ASX 200 rose 5.9%, the price of foreign shares (represented by the US S&P 500) rose 1.5% and the A$ appreciated against the US$ by 4.01%.
  • Investment managers had $1,258.2b in funds under management at 30 September 2007, up $30.6b (3%) on the revised June quarter 2007 figure of $1,227.6b. They managed $874.5b (63%) of the consolidated assets of managed funds institutions.

REVISIONS IN THIS ISSUE

There have been revisions in some series as a result of quality assurance work undertaken with data providers and the receipt of revised administrative data. Specifically, public unit trust data has been revised back to June 2000; life insurance office and superannuation data has been revised back to December 2005; and investment managers data has been revised back to September 2005.
