DECEMBER QUARTER

Summary Comments

New South Wales
  • New South Wales State final demand increased 0.8% in the December quarter and follows a 0.2% increase in the September quarter. In contrast to the September quarter, the private sector drove growth this quarter with Household final consumption expenditure and Private gross fixed capital formation the main contributors to growth. There was broad strength across Household final consumption expenditure while Total dwellings drove the rise in Private gross fixed capital formation. Public gross fixed capital formation also rose, driven by General government, while Government final consumption expenditure was flat.

Victoria
  • Victoria State final demand increased 1.7% in the December quarter and follows a 0.4% decrease in the September quarter. Household final consumption expenditure and Private gross fixed capital formation continued to grow this quarter while the public sector rebounded from negative growth last quarter. Household final consumption expenditure was the main contributor to growth, while and Public gross fixed capital formation also contributed to the rise with strength across both General government and Public non-financial corporations.

Queensland
  • Queensland State final demand increased 0.9% in the December quarter following a 0.1% increase in the September quarter. Household final consumption expenditure and Public gross fixed capital formation were the largest contributors to growth but were offset by a decline in Private gross fixed capital formation. The decrease in Private gross fixed capital formation was driven by falls in Total dwellings and Non-dwelling construction but was mitigated by an increase in Total machinery and equipment. The increase in Public gross fixed capital formation was driven by a rise in General government investment.

South Australia
  • South Australia State final demand increased 0.9% in the December quarter following a flat September quarter. Household final consumption expenditure and Public gross fixed capital formation were the largest contributors to growth. The increase in Public gross fixed capital formation was spread across Public non-financial corporations and General government capital. Non-dwelling construction also rose in the December quarter but its contribution to growth was offset by falls in other components of Private gross fixed capital formation.

Western Australia
  • Western Australia State final demand increased 0.4% in the December quarter and follows a 4.3% decrease in the September quarter. This is the first increase for the state since June 2015. The rise this quarter is driven by Private and Public gross fixed capital formation while Household and Government final consumption expenditure detracted from growth. Strength in Machinery and equipment and Non-dwelling construction drove the rise in Private gross fixed capital formation while an increase in Public non-financial corporations investment drove the rise in Public gross fixed capital formation.

Tasmania
  • Tasmania State final demand increased 0.9% in the December quarter following a rise in the September quarter of 0.1%. Public gross fixed capital formation was the largest contributor to growth after a fall in the September quarter driven by State and local General government. Household final consumption expenditure rose while Private gross fixed capital formation fell.

Northern Territory
  • Northern Territory State final demand increased 3.7% in the December quarter and follows a 4.3% increase in the September quarter. Household final consumption expenditure rebounded from a weak result in the September quarter while Private gross fixed capital formation continued to drive the growth in the December quarter with continued strength in Non-dwelling construction.

Australian Capital Territory
  • Australian Capital Territory State final demand increased 1.6% in the December quarter following a 0.4% decrease in the September quarter. There was a strong rise in Total dwellings which drove the increase in Private gross fixed capital formation.
