The Parenting Payment is available to assist people responsible for caring for children irrespective of their marital status. Parenting Payment is subject to an income and assets test. It provides increased choice for parents in balancing work and family responsibilities.

As at 1 June 2001, there were 49.0 single parenting payments per 1,000 persons in the local government area of Brighton, the highest rate in the state. King Island recorded 12.8 recipients per 1,000 persons, the lowest rate in the state.
