Launch of major indigenous health and welfare report

The report The Health and Welfare of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples will be launched in Sydney on Tuesday August 10 and released simultaneously on a national basis. The report is a joint publication by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

This is the second edition of the publication, which was first released in 1997 and provides a comprehensive statistical overview, largely at the national level, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and welfare. The topics covered include mortality; ill health; risk factors; access to, and use of, services; and recent developments in health and welfare information.

The launch will take place at 12.15 p.m. on Tuesday during the "Health Services Research au.nz 1999" conference in the ballroom at the Manly Pacific Parkroyal Hotel, 55 North Steyne, Manly. The Chair of the AIHW, Professor Janice Reid, will present the report to Mr Sol Bellear, a member of the Ministerial Council for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, representing Indigenous Australians. The launch will follow the presentation to the conference (at approximately 11.45 a.m.) of a paper by Dr Joan Cunningham, from the National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics (NCATSIS), on the subject of Indigenous health and welfare.

Media conference

Following the launch, there will be a media conference at the same venue at 12.30 p.m. when a panel including Professor Reid, Mr Bellear, and Dr Cunningham will be available to answer questions regarding the report.

Media able to attend the news conference are asked to contact Jim Payne (see numbers below) to ensure a copy of the report is reserved for them.

A media release with summary information will be widely distributed. Copies of the publication will be available on request. To arrange access to your copy of The Health and Welfare of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples please contact client.services@abs.gov.au
