DWELLING CHARACTERISTICS AND INSULATION
Over three quarters of Australian households lived in separate houses in 2011 (77%). Tasmania had the highest proportion of households living in separate houses (86%) while the Northern Territory had the lowest (70%). Households living in flats, units or apartments were more common in capital cities (17%) than outside the capital cities (8%). (Tables 1 and 2)
The majority of Australian households had some form of insulation (69%). In the Australian Capital Territory 81% of households had insulation compared with 44% of households in the Northern Territory. The proportion of Australian households with insulation increased from 61% in 2008 to 69% in 2011. The states showing the largest increase were Queensland and New South Wales (15 and 10 percentage points respectively). An estimated 70% of Australian households indicated that their main reason for installing insulation was to 'achieve comfort' although more than one in ten (11%) did so because of the rebate that was offered.
