Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to the spring edition of the Education and Training Newsletter. In addition to the regular updates on ABS activities, we have included a short feature article entitled 'Snapshot: Child Care by Grandparents' which looks at the contribution grandparents make to the provision of child care for their grandchildren. Data for this article was sourced from the recently released Childhood Education and Care Survey, 2011.

Information on preschool and school enrolments for 2011 (including the school enrolment pivot tables) is currently available. Preparations are under way for receiving and processing the latest data collected by state and territory education departments in August this year. These results are scheduled to be released in stages from February 2013.

Work is continuing on the Census Education Quality Studies. The main linkage exercise between the 2011 Census and school enrolments from Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory is currently taking place. Results from this project will pave the way for future data linkage to improve the evidence base for education and training.

The 2012 edition of Year Book Australia was released in May. The Year Book contains two feature articles: 'The National Year of Reading: Libraries helping to make Australia a nation of readers' and 'Reading: The home and family context'; as well as a chapter on education and training that includes a number of short articles on a variety of topics.

The recent publication of Australian Social Trends in September saw the release of two new articles on education and training, 'Education differences between men and women' and 'The right person for the job: The relevance of qualifications to employment'. An abridged version of the second article is also available via podcast.
