This release brings together statistics on international migration into and out of Australia and internal migration within Australia (interstate and intrastate) and information on overseas-born residents of Australia.
STATUS OF DATA WITHIN THIS PUBLICATION
The components of population change (natural increase, net interstate migration (NIM) and net overseas migration (NOM)), are referred to as either preliminary, revised or final. For further information see paragraph 9 of the Explanatory Notes.
ESTIMATED RESIDENT POPULATION BY COUNTRY OF BIRTH
This issue contains final rebased Estimated Resident Population (ERP) country of birth data based on the 2016 Census of Population and Housing for the September 2011 to June 2016 period.
In addition, ERP by Country of Birth by State and Territory is now available based on the 2016 Census. This data is only available for Census years.
REVIEW OF NET OVERSEAS MIGRATION STATISTICS
Due to the discontinuation of the outgoing passenger card by the Department of Home Affairs, the ABS has reviewed its net overseas migration (NOM) statistics, methodology and processing systems. NOM statistics from the September quarter 2011 onwards have been revised in this issue based on the new methods. For further information see paragraph 24 of the Explanatory Notes.
2016 UPDATE OF THE NET INTERSTATE MIGRATION MODEL
Following the 2016 Census, the expansion factors used to account for under-reporting of address change in the Medicare data have been recalculated. These new expansion factors have been used to finalise the quarterly interstate migration estimates for the previous intercensal period (September 2011 to June 2016). The new factors have also been applied to all quarters from the 2016 Census (i.e. September 2016 quarter onwards) and will continue to be used until after the 2021 Census. CHANGES TO METHODOLOGY FOR SUB-STATE POPULATION ESTIMATES AND COMPONENTS
Sub-state population estimates for 30 June 2017 and onwards are now prepared using a new, component-based methodology. Estimates are now prepared by adding natural increase (births minus deaths) and net internal and overseas migration to the base population. The first release of estimates prepared using this new methodology was in the 2016-17 issue of Regional Population Growth, Australia (cat. no. 3218.0). The release included population estimates, as well as each of the components of population change for SA2s and LGAs for 2016-17, allowing users to better understand the main drivers behind population change for sub-state areas. An overview of regional internal migration estimates (RIME) and regional overseas migration estimates (ROME) for 2016-17 based on this new method are provided within this release. In this release, estimates and their components have sometimes been rounded. Rounded figures and un-rounded figures should not be assumed to be accurate to the last digit shown. Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between sums of component items and totals. Analysis featured in this release is based on un-rounded data. Calculations based on rounded data may differ to those published.
