NOTES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This release brings together statistics on international migration into and out of Australia, internal migration within Australia (interstate and intrastate) and information on overseas-born residents of Australia.

STATUS OF DATA WITHIN THIS PUBLICATION

The status of estimated resident population (ERP) by country of birth, and the components of population change (natural increase, net interstate migration (NIM) and net overseas migration (NOM), are referred to as either preliminary, revised or final. For further information see paragraph 9 of the Explanatory Notes.

DATA NOTES

In this release, figures have sometimes been rounded. Rounded figures and unrounded figures should not be assumed to be accurate to the last digit shown. Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sums of component items and totals. Analysis featured in this release is based on unrounded data. Calculations based on rounded data may differ to those published.

REGIONAL INTERNAL MIGRATION ESTIMATES (RIME)

On 26 May 2017, new regional internal migration estimates (RIME) for 2015-16 will be attached to this product, along with commentary highlighting net migration over this time period. RIME for the years ending 30 June 2006 to 2015, as released in the 2014-15 issue of this product, will also be included. Excel datasets will be provided for Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) and Local Government Areas (LGAs) based on the 2011 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). ABS.Stat datasets will also be provided which will summarise the data for various sub-state geographies. Both of these datasets will include migration type (arrivals, departures and net migration), and age and sex breakdowns will be available for broader levels.

Explanatory Notes will be updated to include the latest information about the RIME series when it is attached on 26 May 2017.

REBUILD OF THE OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES SYSTEM (ROADS)

The ABS undertook a rebuild of the Overseas Arrivals and Departures (OAD) system in 2013. The primary aim was to improve the quality of OAD data, given its importance as input to a broad range of estimates, including the estimation of Net Overseas Migration and the Estimated Resident Population by country of birth, which are both featured within this release. Detailed information in the changes and improvements arising from the rebuild of the OAD system appears in the Data Quality Issues (Appendix) in the Explanatory Notes section of Overseas Arrivals and Departures (cat. no. 3401.0).

UPDATE OF COUNTRY CLASSIFICATION

The country classification used within this release is based on the Standard Australian Classification of Countries (SACC), 2011, Version 2.3 (cat. no. 1269.0). For more information and codes see the Country Classification spreadsheet in the 'Downloads' tab of this release online.
