SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during September 2018 (780,500 movements) increased 0.3% when compared with August 2018 (778,400 movements). In September 2018, short-term visitor arrivals were 4.1% higher than in September 2017.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during September 2018. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for September 2017 and September 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (14.6%), followed by Malaysia (11.7%) and Japan (10.4%). The highest percentage decrease were recorded for South Korea (-4.0%) the United States of America (-3.8%) and the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man (-1.4).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during September 2018 (926,000 movements) decreased 0.2% when compared with August 2018 (927,900 movements). In September 2018, short-term resident returns were 4.8% higher than in September 2017.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in September 2018. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for September 2017 and September 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for China (11.0%), followed by Singapore (10.7%), Italy (10.6%) and Japan (10.5%). The highest percentage decrease was recorded for Thailand (-3.2%).
