SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during October 2017 (755,300 movements) increased 0.2% when compared with September 2017 (753,700 movements). Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 6.8% higher than in October 2016.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during October 2017. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for October 2016 and October 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for China (20.0%), followed by India (18.8%), and Hong Kong (18.5%). The highest percentage decrease was recorded for the United Kingdom (-6.1%).

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during October 2017 (884,200 movements) was steady at 0.0% when compared with September 2017 (884,000 movements). Currently, short-term resident returns are 4.8% higher than in October 2016.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in October 2017. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for October 2016 and October 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Italy (14.0%), followed by China (13.2%), and Japan (9.4%).The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Indonesia (-5.6%), Fiji (-4.7%) and United States (-1.6%).
