SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during January 2019 (781,400 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with December 2018 (780,700 movements). In January 2019, short-term visitor arrivals were 3.2% higher than in January 2018.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during January 2019. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for January 2018 and January 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (11.9%), followed by Canada (10.0%) and Singapore (9.4%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for South Korea (-16.1%), the United Kingdom (-3.5%) and Germany (-1.6%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during January 2019 (945,700 movements) increased 0.3% when compared with December 2018 (943,000 movements). In January 2019, short-term resident returns were 6.1% higher than in January 2018.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in January 2019. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for January 2018 and January 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Indonesia (15.2%), China (14.7%) and Japan (10.3%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Thailand (-4.5%) and Vietnam (-1.6%).
