SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during February 2019 (781,800 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with January 2019 (780,900 movements). In February 2019, short-term visitor arrivals were 3% higher than in February 2018.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during February 2019. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for February 2018 and February 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (10.6%), followed by Singapore (5.8%), New Zealand (5.7%) and Japan (5.7%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Malaysia (-5.7%), South Korea (-2.9%) and the United Kingdom (-2.9%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during February 2019 (931,200 movements) decreased by 0.3% when compared with January 2019 (934,200 movements). In February 2019, short-term resident returns were 3.5% higher than in February 2018.

When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for February 2018 and February 2019 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for China (13.3%), India (9.4%) and Japan (8.2%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Vietnam (-8.5%) and Thailand (-5.4%).
