SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during December 2018 (780,300 movements) increased 0.1% when compared with November 2018 (779,900 movements). In December 2018, short-term visitor arrivals were 3.3% higher than in December 2017.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during December 2018. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for December 2017 and December 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for India (13.3%), followed by Japan (12.4%) and Singapore (8.1%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for the United Kingdom (-3.4%) and Germany (-2.4%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns to Australia during December 2018 (944,600 movements) increased 0.5% when compared with November 2018 (940,300 movements). In December 2018, short-term resident returns were 6.4% higher than in December 2017.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in December 2018. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for December 2017 and December 2018 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Indonesia (20.8%), Japan (9.9%) and China (6.8%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Singapore (-5.0%) and Thailand (-4.0%).
