SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS

In trend terms, short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during August 2017 (756,000 movements) increased 0.8% when compared with July 2017 (750,300 movements). Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 7.9% higher than in August 2016.

The following table presents the top ten source countries (based on original estimates) for short-term visitor arrivals during August 2017. When trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals for August 2016 and August 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for China (22.8%), followed by Hong Kong (19.5%), and Malaysia (15.7%). The highest percentage decreases were recorded for the United Kingdom (-3.2%) and South Korea (-2.5%).

SHORT-TERM RESIDENT RETURNS

In trend terms, short-term resident returns from Australia during August 2017 (878,700 movements) decreased 0.3% when compared with July 2017 (881,300 movements). Currently, short-term resident returns are 5.3% higher than in August 2016.

The following table presents the top ten destination countries (based on original estimates) for short-term resident returns in August 2017. When trend estimates for short-term resident returns for August 2016 and August 2017 were compared, the highest percentage increases were recorded for Vietnam (24.6%), followed by Italy (15.9%), and China (15.2%).The highest percentage decreases were recorded for Indonesia (-3.1%), Fiji (-0.9%) and Singapore (-0.7%).
