Data refer to births registered during the calendar year shown, unless otherwise stated. State or territory relates to the state or territory of usual residence, unless otherwise stated. RANDOMISED DATA To protect confidentiality, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has adopted a technique to randomly adjust cells with small values. Cells with a value of zero have not been affected by this randomisation. As a result, sums of components may not add exactly to totals. The technique has been applied to all data issued in this release with the exception of median age calculations and any sub-state data. These very minor adjustments allow for a greater amount of data to be released, and as they are small, do not affect the utility of the data. CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE Revisions to data: This issue contains revisions to the previously published Estimated Resident Population (ERP) for 2012-2015 due to rebasing of Australia's population estimates using the 2016 Census, for the following data cubes and ABS.Stat tables: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4 - 2006 to 2016 Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2 - 2006 to 2016 Births Summary, Local Government Areas - 2006 to 2016 Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas - 2006 to 2016 Births, Summary, Remoteness Areas by Indigenous Status - 2011 to 2016 ABS.Stat 1: Births, Summary, by State ABS.Stat 2: Fertility, by Age, by State ABS.Stat 5: Paternity, by age, by state ABS.Stat 10: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fertility, by age, by state. Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) 2016: This publication contains data for the following data cubes, presented according to the 2016 edition of the ASGS, which refers to boundaries as defined at 1 July 2016: Data cube 1: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 4 - 2006 to 2016 Data cube 2: Births, Summary, Statistical Area Level 2 - 2006 to 2016 Data cube 3: Births, Summary, Local Government Areas - 2006 to 2016. Norfolk Island: Births registered on Norfolk Island from 1 July 2016 are included in this publication for the first time. This is due to the introduction of the Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Act 2015. See Explanatory Note 3 for more information. ABS.Stat datasets: State and territory level data has been published in a series of ABS.Stat datasets, replacing the release of data cubes (Excel files). These datasets include births registered since 1975. ABS.Stat is an interactive free online tool that presents data in a searchable, flexible and dynamic way. Data at the sub-state level and by country of birth is published as data cubes. 2016 POPULATIONS USED IN THIS RELEASE ERPs for 30 June 2016 (rebased preliminary) used in this release are based on the results of the 2016 Census and are as follows: State, Territory and Australia level ERP (preliminary status), released in Australian Demographic Statistics, December Quarter, 2016 (cat. no. 3101.0) published on 27 June 2017. Sub-State ERP (preliminary status), released in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2016 (cat. no. 3235.0) published on 28 August 2017. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ERP will be based on the 2016 Census for the 2016 reference year only, for the following ABS.Stat tables: ABS.Stat 9: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander births and confinements, summary, by state – 2001 to 2016 ABS.Stat 10: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fertility, by age, by state – 2001 to 2016. ERP by Country of Birth for Australia (preliminary status) for 30 June 2016 has been used and is based on the results of the 2011 Census as follows: ERP by Country of Birth for Australia (preliminary status), released in Migration, Australia, 2015-16 (cat. no. 3412.0) published on 30 March 2017. ROUNDING Calculations as shown in the commentary sections of this publication are based on unrounded figures. Calculations undertaken by data users using rounded figures may differ from those published. Where figures have been rounded in tables, discrepancies may occur between sums of component items and totals. ERROR MINIMISATION Every effort is made to minimise error by working closely with data providers, including supporting the careful design of forms, training of processing staff, and efficient data processing procedures. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The ABS values the efforts of the Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages to improve the data quality, coverage and timeliness of birth registration information, processes and systems.
