AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

MEDIAN AGE

  • At June 2017, the median age (the age at which half the population is older and half is younger) in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was 35.0 years, up from 34.4 years in 2012. This was younger than Australia's median age (37.3 years), and the second youngest of all states and territories, after the Northern Territory (32.6 years).
  • The median age of males in 2017 was 34.4 years compared with 35.7 years for females.
  • Within the ACT, the SA2 of Yarralumla in southern Canberra had the highest median age (49.7 years) in 2017, followed by Isaacs (48.3) in Woden Valley.
  • The SA2 with the lowest median age was Acton (21.3 years) which contains the Australian National University, followed by Duntroon (21.9) which has large numbers of defence force personnel.

SEX RATIO
  • There were 98.0 males for every 100 females in the ACT at June 2017.
  • Duntroon, which contains the Royal Military College, was the SA2 with the highest sex ratio in the ACT, at 231.1 males for every 100 females. This was followed by Reid (115.2) in northern Canberra and Hawker (107.6) in Belconnen.
  • The SA2s with the lowest sex ratios in the ACT were Deakin (81.1 males per 100 females) in southern Canberra, Page (85.8) in Belconnen and Ainslie (86.2) in northern Canberra.

AGE AND SEX DISTRIBUTION
  • At June 2017, the proportion of young adults (particularly those aged between 20 and 39 years) for both males and females in the ACT was relatively high compared with Australia as a whole. This may reflect the number of people in this age group who move to the ACT for tertiary education or employment.
  • People aged 20 to 39 years accounted for 33% of the territory's population, compared with 29% of Australia's population.
