ABOUT THIS ISSUE
This issue contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex for 30 June 2001 to 30 June 2017. Estimates are provided for Statistical Areas Levels 2 to 4 (SA2s - SA4s), Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSAs), and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Estimates are also provided for Local Government Areas (LGAs) based on 2017 boundaries.
The summary commentary in this issue focuses on the age and sex distribution of populations at the SA2 level and above as at 30 June 2017, as well as changes to these distributions over five years (2012 - 2017). All ASGS-based and LGA estimates are available from the Downloads tab.
The total population of the Other Territories, namely Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Jervis Bay and Norfolk Island, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.
ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES
The estimates in this issue are final for 2001 to 2016, and preliminary for 2017.
Preliminary total population estimates for SA2s and LGAs as at June 2018 are scheduled for release on 27 March 2019 in Regional Population Growth, 2017-18 (cat. no. 3218.0).
ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES
It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using Census data and administrative by-product data, and are subject to some error. A degree of caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations.
All statistics included in the commentary for this publication are rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets, accuracy to the last digit should not be assumed. For more information see paragraphs 18 to 19 of the Explanatory Notes.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
A new method was introduced to estimate total sub-state populations out from the 2016 Census base, with population change estimated using births, deaths, and internal and overseas migration. For further information see Feature Article: New Methodology Used to Prepare Sub-state Population Estimates. Total sub-state population estimates prepared using this new method were first released in April 2018 in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2016–17 (cat. no. 3218.0). This issue of Regional Population by Age and Sex, Australia breaks these totals down by age and sex. Prior to 2016, age and sex breakdowns of the total population were prepared using registered births and deaths data, and estimates of migration based on the previous Census. In line with the method now used to prepare total sub-state populations, annual regional internal migration estimates (RIME) and regional overseas migration estimates (ROME) by age and sex are now used to prepare age-sex breakdowns rather than Census-based estimates of migration. Further information on these new migration data series is provided in the Explanatory Notes of Regional Population Growth, Australia (cat. no. 3218.0).
An ABS.Stat dataset containing net regional internal migration estimates (RIME) and net regional overseas migration estimates (ROME) for selected age groups and geographic regions is now available from the Downloads tab of this product. As such, RIME by age and sex will no longer be released in Migration, Australia (cat. no. 3412.0) as it has been in the past.
There have been some minor changes to the formatting and content of the Data Cubes released in this product. Regional population estimates by age and sex for all states and territories are now contained in one consolidated Data Cube rather than in separate Data Cubes for each state and territory. This Data Cube contains population estimates only for the most recent year. A full time series back to 2001 is available in ABS.Stat.
GeoPackages for SA2s and LGAs are available from the Downloads tab. GeoPackages contain ERP data by age and sex linked together with ASGS boundaries, and are suitable for data users who have their own Geospatial information systems. Google Earth files are no longer supported and therefore are not included as part of this release.
The title of this product has changed from Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia to Regional Population by Age and Sex, Australia.
