ABOUT THIS ISSUE
This issue contains estimates of the resident population of areas of Australia for 30 June 2003 to 2013. Estimates are provided for Statistical Areas Level 2 to 4 (SA2s - SA4s), Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSAs), Significant Urban Areas (SUAs), Remoteness Areas (RAs), State Electoral Divisions (SEDs), and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Estimates are also provided for Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Commonwealth Electoral Divisions (CEDs), based on 2013 boundaries.
The summary commentary in this issue focuses on population changes at the SA2 level and above between 30 June 2012 and 30 June 2013. All estimates are available from the Downloads tab.
The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.
ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES
The estimates in this issue are final for 2003 to 2011, revised for 2012 (denoted 2012r), and preliminary for 2013 (denoted 2013p).
Age-sex breakdowns of these estimates will be released on 28 August 2014 in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2013 (cat. no. 3235.0).
ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES
It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using Census data, mathematical modelling and population-weighted geographical correspondences and are subject to some error. A degree of caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations. For more information see paragraphs 14 to 17 of the Explanatory Notes.
All statistics included in the commentary for this publication have been presented as rounded values. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets, accuracy to the last digit should not be assumed.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
The estimates in this issue for 2012 supersede those released in previous issues of Regional Population Growth. As well as usual revisions to preliminary sub-state estimates, new models were used for the 2012 estimates taking into account updated historical populations. For more information see paragraph 11 of the Explanatory Notes. The 2012 estimates will not change again until they are finalised after the 2016 Census.
This issue contains a ten-year time series of population estimates on consistent boundaries. Data is released based on the ASGS only.
A Feature Article is included in this issue, which discusses population change in capital cities over the last 40 years, as well as projected growth in the next 40 years.
For the first time, this issue also includes the release of sub-state population estimates in ABS.Stat - an interactive and free online tool that presents data in a searchable, flexible and dynamic way. Data at the SA2 and LGA levels back to 1991 in ABS.Stat can be accessed via the Downloads tab from around 2pm on 3 April 2014.
