NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This issue contains estimates of the resident populations of areas of Australia as at 30 June in each year from 2001 to 2011. Estimates are provided for Statistical Areas Level 2 to 4 (SA2s - SA4s), Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSAs), Local Government Areas (LGAs), Commonwealth and State Electoral Divisions, and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

Estimates for Statistical Local Areas, Statistical Subdivisions, Statistical Divisions and Statistical Districts according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) are also included, along with Remoteness Areas as defined in the 2006 ASGC.

A historical time series of population estimates for SA2s (for years 1991 - 2011), SA3s and SA4s (1981 - 2011) and GCCSAs (1971 - 2011) has also been prepared and is included in this issue.

The text in this issue focuses on population changes at the SA2 level and above over ten years (2001 - 2011). All LGA, ASGS-based and ASGC-based estimates, as well as the historical ASGS time series are available from the Downloads tab.

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island and Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES

The estimates in this issue are final for 2001 to 2006 and preliminary rebased for 2007 to 2011 (denoted 2007pr - 2011pr), based on results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Age-sex breakdowns of these estimates (both ASGS and ASGC) will be released on 31 August 2012 in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 3235.0).

The final 2011 Census-based estimates for 2007 to 2011 are scheduled for release in August 2013. Totals will be added to the Downloads tab in this product and age/sex will be added to Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 3235.0).

ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using Census data, mathematical modelling and population-weighted geographical correspondences and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations. For more information see paragraphs 14 to 17 of the Explanatory Notes.

In commentary based on statistics in this product, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

This issue includes the first release of official population estimates based on the ASGS. It is also the last issue that will include total population estimates based on the ASGC. A new data cube has been added which includes population estimates for SA2s, SA3s, SA4s and GCCSAs. Commonwealth and State Electoral Division boundaries have been updated as defined in the 2011 ASGS and population estimates based on these boundaries are also available in the Downloads tab. Commentary in this product no longer focus on LGA population changes but SA2 level and above.

A data cube containing a historical time series of population estimates based on the ASGS has also been included in this issue. Estimates for SA2s (1991 - 2011), SA3s (1981 - 2011), SA4s (1981 - 2011) and GCCSAs (1971 - 2011) can be found in the Downloads tab. Feedback on these estimates can be provided by email to regional.population@abs.gov.au.

FUTURE CHANGES IN THIS PRODUCT

This will be the last issue to include total population estimates based on the ASGC. Sub-state population estimates from 30 June 2012 will only be prepared and released based at the SA2 level (and above). LGA estimates will continue to be prepared and released.
