ABS regional information easier to find thanks to Google Maps interface

Finding out about a specific area of Australia is now easier, thanks to the release today of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) new-look National Regional Profiles.

The National Regional Profiles now use a Google Maps based interface to make it easier to find information on Local Government Areas and other types of regions across Australia.

Each of the more than 2,000 Regional Profiles offers a range of current social and economic indicators over a five year period.

The profiles also include information from a number of other government departments, such as Tax and Centrelink.


Some of the highlights from today's release include:

The highest average taxable income in a Local Government Area outside of the capital cities in 2006-07 was Ashburton in Western Australia with $71,810 (compared to an average of $51,734 for Australia). Mosman in Sydney had the highest average taxable income in Australia at $150,972.

The Local Government Area of Woorabinda in QLD had the lowest average taxable income in Australia in 2006-07 of $34,457. This LGA also had a high proportion of vehicles over 10 years old in 2008 - 60% (compared to the average for Australia of 45%).

The oldest vehicles in Australia in 2008 were in the Local Government Area of Cue (Western Australia), with 74% more than 10 years old. The LGAs of Flinders (Tasmania) and Coober Pedy (South Australia) had around the same proportion of old vehicles. For Australia, the average was 45%.

These three Local Government Areas had average taxable incomes in 2006-07 lower than the average for Australia ($51,734): $41,093 in Coober Pedy, $43,869 in Flinders, and $49,572 in Cue.

The newest vehicles in 2008 were in the Local Government Area of Adelaide in South Australia - 65% were less than 5 years old. The average for Australia was 28%.

The greatest proportion of people aged over 65 years old in 2008 were in the Local Government Areas of Victor Harbor in South Australia and Queenscliffe in Victoria, both at 32%.

New South Wales

The Local Government Area of Mosman had the highest average value of private houses in NSW in 2007-08 of $1,398,700 and the highest average taxable income in 2006-07 ($150,972).

The oldest vehicles in New South Wales in 2008 were in the Local Government Areas of Bellingen and Kempsey with 59% of registered vehicles over 10 years old. (Nearby Nambucca LGA had 58%).

Bellingen and Kempsey had lower average taxable incomes compared to the average for New South Wales - around $39,000 compared to $54, 742 for NSW. Bellingen and Kempsey also had a higher proportion of people on Newstart Allowance for more than a year than the New South Wales average in 2008 (71% and 69% respectively compared to 61% for New South Wales).

Victoria

The Local Government Area of Melbourne had the highest average value of private sector houses in Victoria in 2007-08, with an average of $901,300.This was an increase in average value from $251,100 in 2003-04. Stonnington had the largest average taxable income in Victoria in 2006-07 ($95,552). While Melbourne had the fifth largest average taxable income in 2006-07 ($65,643).

The Local Government Area of Melbourne had the lowest proportion of registered vehicles aged 10 years or older in Victoria in 2008 (22.0%).

The Local Government Area of Queenscliffe had the highest average value of private sector houses outside the capital city in Victoria in 2007-08, with an average of $381,300.

Queenscliffe had the largest percentage of people aged 65 years and over in Victoria (31.8%) in 2008, compared with 13.5% for Victoria.

Queenscliffe also had the smallest proportion of registered vehicles aged 10 years or over in Victoria in 2008 (46.6%)

Outside of the capital city, the Local Government Area of Yarriambiack had the largest number of registered passenger vehicles per 1000 in Victoria in 2008 with 713, while Mildura had the smallest number, with 514.

The Local Government Area of Mansfield had the largest number of registered motorcycles per 1000 people in Victoria in 2008.

The Local Government Area of Casey had the largest number of births in Victoria in 2008 (3,864). Outside the capital city, Greater Geelong had the largest number of births (2,680) in Vic in 2008.

Queensland

The Local Government Areas with largest average value of private sector houses in Queensland in 2007-08 were outside of Brisbane: Gold Coast $328,400, and Isaac $308,000.

The Local Government Area of Issac also had the highest average taxable income in Queensland in 2006-07 ($66,943) and the third highest proportion of vehicles less than five years old in Queensland in 2008 (36%).

The Local Government Areas of North Burnett, Barcoo and Quilpie all had the largest number of registered campervans per 1000 population in Queensland in 2008 (5).

South Australia

The Local Government Areas of Adelaide and Burnside had the largest average value of private sector houses in South Australia in 2007-08, with $444,000 and $371,200 respectively. These LGAs had the second and third largest average taxable incomes in 2006-07 - $70,804 in Adelaide and $69,761 in Burnside.

Outside of the capital city, the Local Government Area of Roxby Downs had the largest average value of private sector houses in South Australia in 2007-08, with $290,300. This increased from $109,600 in 2003-04. In 2007 Roxby Downs had the fourth largest average taxable income ($67,691) in South Australia.

The Local Government Area of Adelaide had the largest number of registered passenger vehicles per 1000 people in South Australia in 2008 with 1,222. Outside of the capital city, the Local Government Area with the largest number of passenger vehicles per 1000 population was Light with 647 in 2008. For South Australia there were 579 registered passenger vehicles per 1000 people in 2008.

Western Australia

In 2007-08 the Local Government Area of Peppermint Grove had the largest average value of private sector houses in Western Australia, at $1,799,700. This was an increase of 42.2% from 2003-04 ($1,265,800). Nearby Cottesloe had the second largest average value of private sector houses in 2007-08 with $952,000. These Local Government Areas also had the highest average taxable incomes in 2006-07, $136,597 (Peppermint Grove) and $133,916 (Cottesloe).

Outside of the capital city, the Local Government Area of Port Hedland had the highest average value of private sector houses in Western Australia in 2007-08 ($499,000), an increase of 177% from 2003-04. Port Hedland had an average taxable income of $67,031 in 2006-07 (the WA average was $54,570).

The Local Government Areas of Stirling, Wanneroo and Joondalup (all within the Perth region) had the largest number of births in Western Australia in 2007-08, with 2,805, 2,478 and 1,915 births respectively. Wanneroo had the largest increase in number of births from 2003-04 to 2007-08 (900). The Local Government Area of Mandurah had the highest number of births outside of the WA capital city in 2008 (816).

The oldest vehicles in Australia in 2008 were found in the Local Government Area of Cue, with 74% of registered vehicles over 10 years old. Around 70% of registered vehicles in Sandstone LGA were also over 10 years old.

Tasmania

In 2008, the Local Government Area of Hobart had the highest population density in Tasmania with 638 persons/square kilometre. This was followed by Glenorchy with 368 persons/square kilometre, and Devonport with 227 persons/square kilometre.

The Local Government Area of King Island had the highest proportion of persons aged 85 years and over in Tasmania in 2008 (2.6%), while Brighton LGA had the highest proportion of 0-4 year olds (9.7%).

In 2006-07, the Local Government Area of Hobart had the highest average taxable income in Tasmania ($55 531), followed by the Local Government Areas of West Coast ($48 687) and King Island ($47 763), while Tasman had the lowest average taxable income ($36 081).

Northern Territory

The Local Government Areas of Darwin (501) Alice Springs (442) and Litchfield (403) had the largest number of registered passenger vehicles per 1,000 population in the Northern Territory in 2008. In comparison, the Northern Territory had 356 passenger vehicles per 1,000 population.

However, Litchfield Local Government Area had the largest number of total registered vehicles per 1,000 population in the Northern Territory in 2008 with 781, compared to Darwin (737) and the Northern Territory (562).

The Local Government Area of Palmerston had the greatest increase in the number of dwellings approved between 2003-04 and 2007-08 in the Northern Territory, up 116, including 70 private sector houses.

Australian Capital Territory

The Statistical Local Area of Gungahlin had the largest increase in births between 2004 and 2008 in the Australian Capital Territory, increasing by 211% (from 38 in 2004 to 211 in 2008).

The highest average taxable incomes in the Australian Capital Territory in 2006-07, were in the Statistical Local Areas of Forrest ($89,249), Red Hill (89,212), Griffith (86,844) and Deakin (81,536), all in South Canberra.

The Statistical Local Area of Kambah had the largest number of persons receiving a Newstart Allowance (164) in the Australian Capital Territory in 2008. This was a decrease from 235 in 2004. The Statistical Local Areas of Braddon and Turner, both in North Canberra, had the next largest number of people receiving a Newstart Allowance in the Australian Capital Territory in 2008, with 124 and 110 respectively.
